Look at these sculptures. They’re quirky, funny and awkward. They’re playful but they plead for your sympathy. They’re pitiful, but they’re doing their best to survive. I love them. They’re clumsy and confused but their bronze existence demands your attention.
These are the latest works by artist Gamal Abdel Nasser, currently on show at the Zamalek Art Gallery. I’ve reviewed the entire show here, however these are the pieces I like the most. My favourite is this silly little thing: the duck with antelope ears, giraffe neck and a comb for a tail. I want it for a pet. I’d settle for this darling sculpture for a pet, but for its cost price- it’d be a pretty expensive fake animal that I’m not quite distinguished enough to afford. To be fair, it is a single piece by a very established sculptor, but for my money, I think I’ll just have another baby instead. Then I”ll tape a comb to its butt.
