One of the things I love & hate about Egypt is the number of new designers that come up. It’s amazing that we have so many talented people out there who are unafraid to take the risk and plunge into the entrepreneurial world, showing everyone what they’re made of. It is also terrifying that we have an exceptional number of deeply untalented people who are also equally unafraid to drown us in their awfulness. It can be sometimes hard to find the good in the sea of terrible, and very easy to dismiss all as bullshit.
However, every now and then someone comes up and I pick up my pompoms and become an instant fan. My latest cheers go to RNDM Designs by artist Hassan Hassan and his co-founder, Omar Rifaat. Now I’ve known of Hassan and his work forever, and I always felt that his fashion inspired, comic styled, dripping-with-sarcastic-cynisicsm designs felt lost between fine arts and illustration. It’s great work, no doubt- & he’s of the few who consistently got better over time- but I always felt that the work could be both bigger, yet more accessible.
He did just that, and finally developed his style into a brand. I love every mug he’s done so far- the quiet bitchiness exuding from his font alone is brilliant. I love the notebooks- a perfect way to frame & keep his more simpler illustrations. & most recently (I literally just saw it before I started writing this) I love love love RNDM Designs’ Instagram: Excellent styling of the products. I have a good feeling about this, and truly feel that RNDM designs can one day develop into something like Henry Holland‘s brand (House of Holland): quirky, fun, and oozing with sarcasm. I’m waiting on the t-shirts already.
